Hello Church Family,

New City Catechism Question 10
What does God require in the fourth and fifth commandments?
Fourth, that on the Sabbath day we spend time in public and private worship of God, rest from routine employment, serve the Lord and others, and so anticipate the eternal Sabbath.   Fifth, that we love and honor our father and our mother, submitting to their godly discipline and direction.
Should we worship God on a Saturday or a Sunday? Technically speaking, the Jewish Sabbath is observed on Saturdays. Christians began to gather together to worship on Sundays as a response to Jesus’ resurrection on the first day of the week (Luke 24:1). Clearly then, Christians throughout the ages have determined that it is not so much the day of the week that matters, but instead what we do, or do not do, on a day during the week.
Ultimately the Sabbath command is fulfilled in Jesus. The Sabbath was all about rest and worship. Jesus said, “Come unto Me and I will give you rest.”
When we believe in Jesus we participate in the eternal Sabbath.
There is great value in observing a day of rest and worship. Just as tithing releases any hold that money might have on us, so to by observing a Sabbath and worship do we release the hold of business on our lives.
