Hello Church Family,

New City Catechism Question 14
Did God create us unable to keep his law?
No, but because of the disobedience of our first parents, Adam and Eve, all of creation is fallen; we are all born in sin and guilt, corrupt in our nature and unable to keep God’s law.
The Bible verse associated with this question is Romans 5:12: “Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned.”
This verse explains that Adam was our representative, and when he sinned he plunged himself and all his offspring into an endless cycle of sin and death. Now, it might not seem fair to us that we are affected by Adam’s actions, however, by the same principal of representation, by faith Jesus can be our new representative. 1 Cor. 15:22: “For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.”
Praise God that He sent His Son Jesus to be the new head of the human race!

Hello Church Family,

   New City Catechism Q#13
Can anyone keep the law of God perfectly?
Since the fall, no mere human has been able to keep the law of God perfectly, but consistently breaks it in thought, word, and deed.

This question and answer couplet contains a small word which points us to the gospel. “Mere.” No mere human has been able to keep the law… Praise God that the Eternal Word became flesh and dwelt among us. Jesus was fully man, but also fully God. Jesus was no mere human. Through His sacrificial life and death, Jesus fulfilled the law of God so that God could be both just and justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. (Romans 3:26)
